Had this message waiting for me on Myspace when I got home from work tonight:
This is not NAME WITHELD but someone who is definately going to protect her ans someone who will most definately take care of anyone who thinks they can in anyway hurt her. You think you are such a smart ass taking pictures of her. Well let me tell you this If I ever see you you will wish you never snapped a pic of her. It is an invasion of her privacy and I will take that camera or pphone ans shove it so far up your ass you will wish and beg for me to stop.
A friend!!!!
As much as talk of shoving electronic devices up my ass really turns me on . . . I will let the letter stand for itself.
(And, just between us, there is no picture.)

Let me rant for a second: Why are you hanging out with these people? And the myspace crowd? You can do better. You are brilliant and beautiful and witty and fun-spirited, not lame and seedy and jealous and petty.
This is what happens when you leave the Midwest, my friend! Hehe
KC, I think your comments are a tad bit regionalist. So, I will attempt to say something to blow regionalism out of the water:
This is all fodder for my future career as a short story writer.
What was that wonderful little movie? The one where the main character who is an academic type goes to a home in a small midwestern town for pregnant women and has an affair with the home-manager's daughter. Remember that line? "Don't worry, I won't say anything to hurt you. It will all just come out one day years from now in a bitter short story." I am butchering the line horribly, but gosh, that was an awesome line, very unique and wonderfully understated movie moment.
Anyhow, is it cultural appropriation to write about the riff-raff you grew up with? Somehow it seems like in the very least it must be intellectual appropriation.
I am planning a blog on cultural appropriation. I may even set down to write it today in between laundry loads. It is sure to offend everyone because it is one subject that I actually have pretty strong feelings about.
KC, You are right though, I cannot imagine anyone I ever met in Lawrence sending me a letter like that (nevermind the diction, grammer, spelling). It is a cultural phenomenon. Some places have bad mojo. People have been fucked over too many times by IBM and Lockheed Martin and welfare and medicaid and irresponsible lovers and uncaring friends. Things hang on a place and wear on the people until distrust and angst penetrate into every human interaction they have. This may sound over dramatic, but really, Binghamton is on its way to becoming the Flint Michigan of Upstate New York. You walk around and folks just looks depressed. People at the bar mock themselves and lament that they cannot leave town for family reasons or financial reasons. No one wants to live here. It is insane. The crazy thing is that it is so visually stunning here with the trees and the waterfalls and lake and gorges, but it is so socially ugly.
KC, remember that reservation feeling? I never knew what it meant to be opressed until we went on that trip. It is beyong despair. It is not knowing there is such a thing as hope or comfort.
Okay now I am getting very sad, I must stop typing and do something positive and active with my day.
Midge, Thanks always for your honesty. You are right, Binghamton isn't as bad as Flint, but it IS on the decline.
I have a budding theory about defense contracts and how they harm towns like ours, but it is still in the nascent stages, so I won't trouble folks with it.
I don't think badly of anyone who stays in a place because of his or her family. I just think it is sad that people feel they have to choose between family and career options or family and a place that will accept them socially. This is esp. important to queer folks (among others).
aren't you gone yet?
Anonymous,
I know your IP address at SUNY-Binghamton, why not just use your real name?
